A travel enthusiast in Brussels, Belgium is displayed an ad for a luxurious resort in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt on social media. Said ad is run by a digital marketer based in Mumbai, India. Said marketer works for an organization headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Said marketer earns his salary in USD while meeting his expenses in the local currency INR.

This is a true story. This is my life right now.

This is only possible in the time of pandemic-induced remote work. I feel a little late to write about the ‘remote work’ trend, but the fact that the pandemic is kind of over and this still continutes make me believe that it’s not really a trend anymore. It’s here to stay.

I got offered this position by an industry expert who came across my profile during one of my previous interviews. I was honored. This opportunity has given me the space to spend more time with my family, travel, explore my spiritual side, pick up hobbies, save a lot of money and learn a skill professional skill, all while I’ve been interacting with and building my network of colleagues and professionals from Russia to Egypt to Denmark. It’s spectacular. It’s so incredible that sometimes I find it hard to comprehend too!

Here’s why I believe remote work is here to stay.

A world of resources

Remote working has opened up companies to talent all across the world. Consider the developing economies. These countries work much harder to educate their people, the people work harder and are usually paid lower than the developed countries. They’re highly skilled and willing to put in long hours to deliver results beyond expectations! This talent is also happier to be associated with international firms since it paves the way for better opportunities in the future.

Cost savings

Remote work has allowed companies in the West to hire people across the world, and pay them a fraction of what they’d pay locals! The employee gets paid considerably more than what the local organisations would pay, and he is able to save a lot more money. This is literally a win-win.

Happy employees, happy organizations

Being able to design their lifestyle around work in their comfort zone keeps the employees happy. Motivated employees work better and with dedication, delivering the required results. This arrangement works superbly for everyone involved!

While the debate goes on about office v remote work and companies are going back to the office culture, I do believe that a hybrid culture might work best for companies that only hire locally. Giving employees the flexibility they’re now accustomed to along with the facetime and collaborative opportunities are now key to their corporate well-being. And for those that are open to hire across borders, the opportunities are truly endless!

Happy Monday to all the office-goers & remote workers!
